TRAVEL IDEAS
Excursion to OSORNO Volcano and Petrohue Waterfalls
| |
In the morning we set out on a full day excursion to the Osorno Volcano. We shall drive along the shore of Lago Llanquihue with breathtaking views of the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes. Our first real stop however will be at the Saltos de Petrohue (Petrohue Rapids). This series of rapids and waterfalls were formed long ago by cooling lava from the Volcano towering behind them. They form an impressive sculpture of extruded volcanic rock shaped by thousands of years of thundering water flow. From the Saltos de Petrohue we shall drive up onto the lower reaches of the now immense Osorno Volcano (2.660 m). A gravel road leads to 1.300 m altitude where there is a small mountain hut. From here the Volcano seems very, very large. Surrounding views of the volcanoes Calbuco (pronounced cal-boo-co), Antillanca (auntie-yanka) and Tronador (tron-a-door) with the Andes towering in the background.
