For
example, you could explore HuerquehueNational Park, which could
be the setting for a whole storybook with its deep forests and canyons, isolated
lakes and high mountains. Enjoy the silence, interrupted only by the sound of babbling
rivers and creeks, and breathe in the pure air. You might even spot the giant "King
of the Skies", the condor, as it ascends the rugged mountainsides without
moving its wings.

You
can also climb the active volcano Villarrica. At the summit, you can look into
the crater and enjoy panoramic views of all the surrounding volcanoes. With
such a reward, the effort of the ascent will quickly be forgotten! For visitors
who are more interested in depths than in heights, the "underworld of the
Villarrica lava caves is worth a visit: testimony to the many eruptions of this
very active volcano..

Continue
your trip to Puerto Varas. When you wake up in Puerto Varas and look over LakeLlanquihue,
you might think this city was built for aesthetic rather than economic reasons.
The city was founded by German settlers in 1854. and even today German culture
is in evidence throughout the region, for example in the wide range of delicious
kuchen (cakes) you can find here. The little village of Frutillar,
with its interesting museum on German colonization, is located nearby, and a
variety of adventurous trips by raft, on mountain bikes, on horseback, or
trekking and hiking can be enjoyed in the national park Alerce Andino, with its giant Alerce
trees, and the Vicente Pérez Rosales park.
Puerto Varas is an
excellent starting point for excursions in the Lake
District and you can easily return to the same comfortable bed
every night to relax and enjoy the view of the lake.

Visit the "Saltos de Petrohue", a series
of rapids and waterfalls that have shaped impressive sculptures of volcanic
rock from the Osorno volcano, visible in the background. On your way to
Petrohue, you have a wonderful view of the snow-capped volcanoes of Calbuco and
Osorno. On your way to Petrohue, you have a wonderful view on the snow-capped volcanoes Calbuco and Osorno.
Afterwards, you can choose between climbing the Osorno
volcano or joining a catamaran trip across lakeTodos los Santos, which is surrounded by high, forested
mountains.
On the eastern side of the lake, you can go for a walk
through the dense foggy rainforest of the VicentePerezRosalesNational
Park and find a fascinating nature trail which
explains many of the native trees and plants.
Alternatively, follow an adventurous gravel road up the
volcano (2660m/8,727ft). The view from here to the top of the volcano and the
surrounding volcanoes is absolutely stunning.

An alternative activity is a trip to the mystical
island of Chiloé, where time seems to have stood
still. Farmers and fishermen live in their picturesque villages in much the
same way as they did centuries ago.
The landscape is green and when the sun shines,
the painted fishing boats appear even more colourful. For
a long time, Chiloé was cut off from the mainland and therefore even today, it
abounds in ancient traditions, myths and legends. Special features of the
island are its many wooden churches built without a single nail or bolt, part
of the UNESCO World Heritage list.
